OC WASHI

Revolt in Color

An evolution of Revolt II, WASHI is a color font designed to capture the human spirit of resistance with an aesthetic that feels instinctively handmade, disruptive, and empowering. Embodying positive protest, WASHI has eight color palettes that transform messaging into a carnival rather than a riot, celebrating a sense of unity with an outspoken attitude and an optimistic voice.

OC WASHI enhances the subversive human made aesthetic while reducing the need of human intervention.

Repeated letters are automatically replaced with up to 4 alternate designs, avoiding the mechanical uniformity often associated with machine-made fonts.

The heights, widths, spacing, and baseline positions of the characters vary, providing a dynamic visual experience emphasizing speed of communication over laborious craft.

8 color palettes are made with up to 4 colors on as many as 9 layers per glyph.

Every character is composed of straight, individual ‘strips’, each on their own layer with a color and subtle transparency applied. These layers are then applied on top of each other creating visible overlaps.

The overlapping colors and subtle opacity add depth and a tangible quality to type.

Washi?

The color fonts are called 'Washi' in reference to washi tape, a Japanese masking tape made from rice paper that is available in a wide variety of colors. Unlike painter's tape, washi tape is semi-opaque so areas where the tape overlap itself appear richer. This is emulated with subtle opacity of the color tape segments.

The term washi comes from the words 'Japanese Paper'.

Whatever you proclaim as your identity here in the material realm is also your drag. You are not your religion. You are not your skin color. You are not your gender, your politics, your career, or your marital status. You are none of the superficial things that this world deems important. The real you is the energy force that created the entire universe!

SAMO©

The three bar ‘E’ in the font is a tribute to the writing style of graffiti artist SAMO© (primarily associated with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat).

SAMO© was a tag used on the streets of New York City from 1977 to early 1980. It accompanied short phrases, in turns poetic and sarcastic, mainly painted on the streets of downtown Manhattan.

A crown is also included in the glyph set as Basquiat frequently used the symbol in his artwork to depict himself as a king, portray his great ambition, or acknowledge the brilliance of other artists that influenced him.

A selection of images in black and white to show the influence the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat / SAMO© had on the masking tape protest font OC REVOLT II
