Masking Tape Variable Display Font

OC Revolt II brings the raw energy of masking tape protest graphics into a variable display font. Each character is built from individual strips with visible tears and imperfections, while automatic cycling alternates reduce repetition and keep every setting feeling genuinely hand-applied.

OC REVOLT was a variable display font made for the protest graphics of the NYC based Non-Complicit project that ran during the T*#@p Brexit era. Initially Non-Complicit made guerrilla type with masking tape applied in situ or directly to silk screens before we made a scalable digital version.

Embracing urban aesthetics and human imperfections, the heights, widths, spacing, and baseline positions of the characters vary, providing a dynamic visual experience that emphasizes speed of communication over laborious craft.

It adds 4 versions of each letter of the alphabet along with 2 versions of double-letter ligatures. Each automatically cycle to prevent visual repetition, manual adjustment, and the mechanical uniformity often associated with machine-made fonts. What remains constant is the consistent width of the tape, creating a cohesive narrative as if each character emerged from the same roll.

OC REVOLT II enhances the subversive human made aesthetic while reducing the need of human intervention.

Reference

The three bar ‘E’ in the font is a tribute to the writing style of graffiti artist SAMO© (primarily associated with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat).

SAMO© was a tag used on the streets of New York City from 1977 to early 1980. It accompanied short phrases, in turns poetic and sarcastic, mainly painted on the streets of downtown Manhattan.

A crown is also included in the glyph set as Basquiat frequently used the symbol in his artwork to depict himself as a king, portray his great ambition, or acknowledge the brilliance of other artists that influenced him.
